Freakin' Good Design or Just Freaky

Every so often, I come across these chairs....

I really don't know what to make of them!

They clearly make a statement.

An exaggerated, contemporary take
on a classic shaker chair.

And yet...

I just can't seem to shake this image of Lily Tomlin,
and her famous skit on "Laugh In".

{also a classic}

and that's the truth...

wow, so not freaky. they're awesome, but best as a one off i think? rather than a set. mega statement piece!

I am just wondering whether they are comfortable at all, but I love the design.

Maybe one with a cardboard cut-out of Lily sitting on it! I'm into whimsy at the moment...definitely fits in that category I reckon.

No Way
Earlier today we posted the same picture on Qerat, this is Freaky :)

The chairs are definitely freaky, but that Louis Poulsen light fixture in the first shot is AWESOME!!

And I adore both Lily Tomlin and "Laugh-in" too!

i've never seen these. hmmmmm...... i'm not sure. i probably wouln't of thought too much of them, but now i can't look at them w/o thinking of Lily Tomlin in pig-tails and bobby socks! oy!

I don't think I would ever purchase one of these ... If I did, it would be confined to a corner with a pile of books on it as a room accessory or statement piece. I can't imagine that sitting in a chair like this would be comfortable -- I certainly wouldn't buy them for a functional table as in the first photo; I want people to be able to sit in the chairs in my home! Still, an interesting look. :)

I like some oversized chairs but these feel kind of prison-like.

Scientific Housewife said...

Those chairs are very interesting.

lisaroy said...

They certainly make a statement! I think I would probably tire of them since there's no way to really make them sit anywhere quietly! And now all I can think of is Lily Tomlin too so they wouldn't work for me! : )

Amy R. said...

Funky is the word I choose. I would like to sit in one of these. I love the Lilly Tomlin pic, just funny and cute!

La Dolfina said...

They are interesting but more funny since you drew the parallel to Lily Tomlin... good call :)

Cool chairs, but they definitely conjure up that image of Lily Tomlin!

I kinda like fun chairs but I have to say not my fave and I am very eclectic too.

They are funky! I am not sure if I would have them in my house but if I came across one, I would for sure sit in it.... just for fun. : )

Not sure what I think about the chairs, but I don't see them being used in any of my design projects. BTW, I tagged you in yesterday's post...should you wish to...re-post the sixth photo from your beginning days as a blogger.

They're definitely a statement, although not one that I'd necessarily want to make in my house.

hmmm, me too, i'm on the fence. at first i'm thinking wow, those are fabulous and then i'm thinking wow, that back is sooo high. kind of alice in wonderland-ish or something. a conversation piece no doubt though. you know what might work with that is if you owned one only and placed it either in the corner of a room with a gorgeous throw over it, or before a small desk like the one you featured in the lower photo. but all around a dining room table, might freak you out after a while. :)

Heavenly Housewife said...

I think its quite pretty in a minimalist sense, but would i want to sit on it? Probably not, looks really uncomfortable.

Krysten @ After 'I Do' said...

They kind of freak me out, to be honest...

love the chair at the black "desk". adds a beautiful line and sense of architecture.....

FREAKY!!

Kathysue said...

The seem more sculputural than functional to me so I find them interesting. Talk about scale and proportion!! I probably would have it sitting in a corner but not for sitting more for looking at!! Love Lily Tomlin, she was the best, Love her in one ringy dingy too. Makes me laugh just to think about it, Kathysue

I've seen these chairs before too and remain unsure as to whether I could really declare liking them. I think I could manage to live with one in a cottage setting... maybe at the door with a blanket over that incredibly tall back.... there I go again. Getting very descriptive about the imaginary! xoxo Erica

Stephanie said...

I can't decide either, but I definitely like them better in black... hmmm ...

The chairs are very inspiring. Clear your mind of the word "Freaky" and perhaps you'll see them with the eyes of an artist;-)

Are those the chairs from OLY? I wanted to get those in silver for my kitchen. Your chairs on your post look larger than Oly chairs. Check it out if they are not from there!

Roxy Te Owens said...

so fantastical! I could see them at the Mad Hatter's tea ;)

Sally@DivineDistractions said...

There's probably a reason you don't find any pictues of people sitting in these chairs! I'm afraid they would make me feel a little clostraphobic, however, I could see them flanking a cool contemporary table more as sculpture than seating. What if they were hung on the wall...Does becoming a sculpture or art piece make you any less FREAKY???? don't know!

A little bit of column A, and a little bit of column B...

Totally cool overall!

i love this chair. i'm not sure if it's designed by studio ilse (they've a bench look alike). it reminds me those collars queens and kings used to wear in the 18th century. it is quite sexy too in a sense it hides you but not quite, if you know what i mean?

Charlotta Ward said...

No, I love them!
Like upside down skirt hoops!
Fantastic with a plain table in a dining room.
Very Adam's Family in a totally modern way.

Way cool.
