Coffee or Cocktail?

{cocktail}

{coffee}

{cocktail}

{coffee}

{cocktail}

{coffee}

{cocktail}

So what do YOU call these types of tables?
Coffee or Cocktail?

There really is no wrong or right answer...
and no rhyme or reason as to why I labeled
them the way I did.

{might be my weird mood today}
I need some coffee, or maybe a cocktail!

coffee, of course ;)

I always called it a coffee table :o) We moved ours out while the little one was crawling/learning to walk. Need to get it back in play now that she's older!

i always refer to a cocktail table.....i guess since my showroom is quite upscale, I feel cocktail is more appropriate than coffee!!!!

Debby said...

I love that third room, it's gorgeous! When it doubt have an after dinner coffee w/ some liquor and whipped cream! xo

those are all coffee tables in my book :)
and lovely images!

style'n said...

yes coffee now and definitely cocktail later :)
and as far as these gorgeous pics-I would take either coffe or cocktail! Love all of these looks. I love the elegance of the first "cocktail" picture.

I noticed that the ones you labeled "cocktails" had more seating (like a party)! Maybe you labeled them subconsciously. I love the space with the zebra bench and large mirror behind it. I would definitely accept an invite for cocktails in that space. Yum! Great post.

I always say coffee. Any maybe a coffee flavored cocktail?

HAMPTON HOSTESS said...

good point--I always find myself using the two terms interchangeably--start with a coffee and move on to the cocktail!

Acanthus and Acorn said...

I never gave this any thought until now...great observation! If I'm honest I use both. I think for me the language changes based on the setting and....sometimes the client!

Fashion, Art and other fancies said...

Coffee or cocktail? Why can't one fancy both in this sense;-)

Erika ~TiptoeButterfly~ said...

coffee .. i don't think i ever called them a cocktail table ..

Susie @ Maddie's Nest said...

I use them both....but not sure of why I choose which, when? Probably cocktail more for the living room? Interesting post.

Ashley said...

I need a cocktail!!!! I love these photos!

OneCraftyFox said...

I think most could serve as both! Fabulous choices. Now I want a cocktail... or a coffee... ;)

What a great post and question!!!
I usually call them coffee tables, not sure why?

I drink coffee at my desk, like right now :)

Fun post! I call the larger tables in family rooms coffee tables and the small, delicate formal area ones cocktail tables - yet you can certainly be formal and drink coffee and around family I always need cocktails!

The Buzz said...

Could they be coffee cocktail tables?? That way, if you're sipping a cocktail with coffee liqueur you've got it covered! Love the first image and the "tree trunk" side table!

Coffee in the morning, cocktail in the evening. I am with THhe BUzz on this one, I love the tree trunk side table. --Gretchen O.

Coffee! Though I prefer cocktails to coffee ... hmmm ... I need a skinny skinny one for a narrow part of my living room. Any ideas? It's a pretty traditional room, and I can't find one I love.

Shannon @ What's Up Whimsy said...

Coffee table all the way!

DesignTies said...

I call them coffee tables -- although I think cocktail table is probably more appropriate for a table in a formal/elegant room.

BTW, LOVE that Monique Lhuillier living room!!

Brandi said...

I call them coffee, never thought about it though but it can be both!

lisaroyhandbags said...

It almost looks like the ones you labelled 'cocktail' were taller than the others but it might be my lack of coffee yet this morning making my eyes go funny! Either way, they're all great! Is it too early for a cocktail? :)

qerat said...

We call them Coffee table here :)

stylebyrachael said...

I call them all coffee, but I definitely like cocktail better.

coolkids said...

I could always go for a cocktail.:) but love coffee! We call them coffee tables. Not sure why though!

Ms. Bright said...

Both! I think I switch depending on the mood of the room. Good call, I've always wondered the same thing.

casey at loft and cottage said...

What Ms. Bright said. Depends on the mood of the room. I always called the coffee tables growing up; then the more I got into the design biz, the more it seemed cocktail was the preferred term. But really, today, anything goes. And btw that first image is perfect!

Kim@Chattafabulous said...

Depends on whose using it. Mine is coffee!

Tina said...

Had no idea you could call it a 'cocktail- table'. Never heard of it before. Nice to learn someting new, always is!
Love all of the pictures, but the second one is my favourite one.
Hugs!

Coffee table. Although, you got me in the mood for hot chocolate.

Patricia Torres said...

ha ha.. I call then coffee.. but I could do with cocktail too.. :-)

christine, just bella said...

Haha, I thought I was missing something at first! Cocktail table is definitely new to me - sounds fancy ;)

Style Maniac said...

In my decorating biz I use both descriptions, with no rhyme or reason why. One thing that's certain though: it's always the hardest piece to find in a room. No idea why that is, either.

Greet said...

Of no importance how you call the tables, they are all beautiful! Wonderful post, I really enjoyed it!!

I'd go with coffee! Even though that first room is my favorite and it's perfect looking for cocktails!

Beautiful tables! I guess for some reason I've just always called them coffee tables. I wonder if that is a Southern thing? Not that we don't drink cocktails!

Amber Blue Bird said...

Coffee tables...if you call your table a cocktail you need a drink asap

Valerie said...

I could definitely go for a cocktail in room #1 that you posted right about now. :)

pretty pink tulips said...

Well, I start every day with coffee. End a few with cocktails. Realize I actually call them coffee tables. But, I have one room where it should definitely be known as the cocktail table. Or ottoman....since it's not really a table. Ok....does it sound like I've already had a cocktail! :)

Nuit said...

I'll have the coffee... then the cocktail ;)

I LOVE these spaces!!!

Ren- Lady Of The Arts said...

I call the table in our family room (off the kitchen-TV/Den/Family room area) a coffee table and in our front 'formal' living space (library really) I call it a cocktail table-
When we have company the monkeys are all either outside in the pool/trampoline or family room and the adults have drinks outside or in the front room on the cocktail table.
Its funny that you ask this because I am VERY specific about what I call things because otherwise my hubsband and monkeys would have less of an idea what I want of them.

Love love one and three...when in doubt, go with cocktail...! After picking up the kids from school... :)

Lol....at first I thought, does she wonder if I'd have a coffee in that room or a cocktail?!! Because if you look at the rooms, some are more sofisticated than the others,which in that case I'd prefer a cocktail!
Boy, I was way off......lol

Is is terrible that I read through this whole post debating which room I would rather have coffee or a cocktail in? Hehe! Not till the end did I consider the tables! I always say "coffee table" but, I have to agree with Nancy, cocktail is definitely more glam! Lovely choices!

abigail said...

I guess it would depend on the time of day! Coffee in the morning, cocktails in the evening!

Jenn @ Living Luxe for Less said...

I always say a coffee table, but I think I like the idea of a cocktail table much better! Have a wonderful weekend...hopefully it involves both coffee, and a few cocktails!

Heather {A Measure Of...} said...

I've always called these coffee tables, but I think that sounds so '70s... I might try to update my vocab and start calling 'em cocktail tables. I like its poetry better! Hope you're having a great weekend! :)

traci zeller designs said...

HA! When I was first reading this post, I thought you were labeling the rooms as more appropriate for coffee or cocktails ... and I also thought that was such a fun way to describe the feel of a room! Regardless, I use the terms interchangeably. ;-)

Heather Taylor said...

I usually refer to them as coffee tables, but a cocktail table sounds just as equally good.
