Flipping through Veranda magazine the other day, I came upon this image by sister design team, Kirsten Kelli. The Keith Haring artwork here, immediately took me back to the mid-eighties, and more significantly, a prized swatch watch that I had proudly worn then. Beyond bummed that I literally have no idea what happened to this watch, as I would love to see it again. A fervent online search revealed only this version, mine was bright red, but this is pretty close. Like a Proustian Madeleine, I was instantly transported back to this decade, which now in hindsight seems like one giant John Hughes film. Do any design elements ever make you feel nostalgic?

I have been waxing nostalgic for the mid-eighties for a good while. I think glazed floral chintzes really take me back and oddly those "lean against the wall" bookcases. I thought they were so cool back then.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, I recently came across a watch exactly like one I had when I was little - my first watch. Black with painted flowers and a little flip open door on top of the face. I bought it instantly!
ReplyDeleteOMG Swatch Watches! Boy are we dating ourselves! xx
ReplyDeleteLove the 80's! More in an accessory type of way! Loving all of the graphic prints and neon's that are out... and this comparison is awesome! That's a swatch! Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh my Swatch collection...what happened to mine too?! I still remember layering them, along with mix matched neon socks, tight rolled jeans. Haha.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Can we make more jewelry from our art? Turquoise always reminds me of the early 90's. That and geometric shapes.
ReplyDeleteLook at that resemblance! Never did the swatch watch thing. I'm loving the chairs and pillows in your image above...so striking!
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny! You have a keen eye to make that match. The Veranda image is divine, as I am sure your watch was in '85! :)

I remember the Christmas that my uber cool uncle gave everyone in our family Swatch watches. Boy, did we think we were cool.
ReplyDeleteI love it when something transports us back to another time!

Oh, I had quite the swatch collection. I, too, now am wondering what happened to mine. BTW, I can walk to their shop here in Dallas. A treat!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great catch! I am sure that print will find it's way back into fashion.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Did you wear multiple swatch watches at the same time? We did that. WOW!
ReplyDeleteHA! Know what you mean - this definitely happens to me all the time!!
ReplyDeleteSwatch watches...that brings back a few memories. Was it really in the 80's they were around? Seems like yesterday, nice to remember though.

Ah yes, I remember wearing a couple at a time, probably with my neon outfits or stand up collar polo shirts. I graduated high school in 1985 so I love thinking about that decade! And I still love watching Ferris Bueller!
