One Room Challenge: Week One

It's Week One, Day One of the One Room Challenge (ORC) and I'm thrilled to be participating once again (this is my third time)! The One Room Challenge is Linda from Calling It Home's creation. Twenty design bloggers will be redesigning a room in six short weeks. Every Wednesday we'll be posting our progress. You can see my first ORC kitchen project here and last year's ORC guest bathroom project here. It's stressful but addictive!

I always like to kick things off with an inspiration image. It's not only a great way to start a project but it's a fun way to begin this post as well.  In case you haven't already guessed from the image above, I'm tackling our laundry room this time around.

As you can see from these "before" shots, our laundry room has a lot of potential. Right now it's just a dumping ground for random things and pretty much a big mess. We moved into this house about a year and a half ago, and it's been neglected ever since.

I've never had a laundry room this big and also one conveniently located on the second floor, where all the bedrooms are. Between the space and location our laundry room has a lot going for it, but I'd love to get a more cohesive and overall pretty design happening in here.

First off, I know I want to replace the old dryer with a new dryer that matches the new washing machine. I'm also going to switch out the sink faucet to something a bit more stylish. Getting all the clutter and junk out and organizing this room better is going to make a huge difference.  Ideally I'd love to rip out the tile floor and replace it with something with a lot of personality. Speaking of ripping out, the beige counter tops have got to go, too. I love the white cabinetry and the hardware, so those are going to stay.

The walls have a lot going on with different angles due to the attic type ceiling. I'm trying to decide how to deal with them, paint or wallpaper? I LOVE Schumacher's Birds and Butterflies wallpaper (in the inspiration image above) and I've always wanted to do a room with it. I'm going to order a sample from Decorator's Best, a sponsor of the ORC. While I'm at it, I'm ordering a bunch of other samples as well. I'll also be on the lookout for some pretty paint colors, thinking maybe white or a light shade of gray. I've included a few more inspiration images of both painted and wallpapered laundry rooms below.

As you can see, I have no shortage of inspiration and ideas and a lot of choices to think about. Most of the decisions will come down to price and availability, as there's only six weeks to work with here. I love the kick in the pants that this challenge provides, it's a great way to motivate and get a room done. If you have a blog and a room that you'd like to do, I highly recommend that you join in on the fun and be a part of the ORC. You can read up on how to do that here.

Of course you won't want to miss out on all the exciting projects going on with the rest of the ORC participants - go check them all out:

  2. This room definitely has great potential- I can't wait to see what you do with it! I was so excited to see you're doing the ORC again this year:)
I used the birds and butterflies wallpaper in a little reading nook for my daughter and absolutely love it! All the black in the pattern really grounds it and makes it look so sophisticated.

  11. Hi Sue, Wow! Lots of great ideas and you are starting with a nice sized space. I need to follow your progress as I have yet to anything to mine since we finished the house 8 months ago.. My room is a square space with ONLY my washer and dryer so I'm thinking open shelves and lots of counter space. We have a sink in our mudroom but not in the laundry room and I wish we'd designed that in. Have fun!
