Once I started thinking about The Plaza Hotel,
my thoughts led to Kay Thomspon,
the author of the amazing Eloise children's books.
and write the famous Eloise books,
but she was an amazing actress, singer and dancer as well!
Kay Thompson starred in the movie, "Funny Face" alongside
Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
Ms. Thompson played Maggie Prescott,
the editor in chief of Quality Magazine.
This character was based entirely on Diana Vreeland.
Watching "Funny Face" on dvd recently,
I couldn't get over how well this
fifty year old movie holds up today.
Which got me thinking.....
"Just go ahead. Give ideas away.
Under every idea there is a new idea
waiting to be born."
~Diana Vreeland
If you would like to win your own copy of this dvd, PLUS, a copy of Diana Vreeland's autobiography, "DV", a witty and charming tell all about the glitz and drama of the high fashion world, leave a comment, and a way to reach you, below.
One winner will be drawn using Random.Org
on Friday May 14th, and announced on Saturday, May 15th.

I meant to comment on your Friday post because it just about made me fall out of my chair. Where to begin. I am OBSESSED with Eloise and the Plaza. It was the first book I ever read and one of my earliest memories is staying with my Mom at the plaza when I was like, maybe, 5 and dressing up in my eloise outfit and running around like a banshee all over the hallways (I bet the other fancy guests were totally thrilled, there was probably a version of me on every floor). My mom was such a good Mom at that age, she so encouraged my imagination and sense of whimsy and made sure to take me to all of the ballrooms and corners of the Hotel just like Eloise!
ReplyDeleteIn college (I was an American Studies major) I wrote my thesis on Eloise for my Childrens Literature in America class...WHAT a scintillating read. I'll pass that along to you if you need to refresh yourself on the academic prowess of a frequently intoxicated college senior... Anyway, the point of this novel is that I love the plaza. And you. And Kay Thompson. And Eloise. And Diana Vreeland. And, well, you.
You are a girl after my own heart. Audrey and D.V?! You just can't go wrong! Thanks so much for hosting! xx
ReplyDeleteI LOVE DV! Actually have the book but a copy of the DVD would be divine...how fun! Hope you had a fantastic day yesterday, and have a great week...

I took my daughter to The Plaza for afternoon tea after we finished seeing the 2008 Kips Bay Showhouse. We had a great time - and who ended up sitting next to us - Ellen Burstyn and Marcia Gay Harden. On their way out Marcia stopped at our table to let us know that my daughter's book had slipped out of her bag. We had a short but nice conversation - they were both lovely!

My son built (yes, built) a replica of the Plaza, as only an 8 year old can. With the fountain out front (made with blue pipe cleaners) and flags flying --- he even did an interior room if you turn it around. And this was for fun. Might just have to post it given all the enthusiasm about the hotel. I'm sure Eloise would have liked his rendition!
ReplyDeleteI think as a blog reader who is currently living the life of Eloise at the Plaza- I should win this giveaway. I would really Kay Thompson proud. :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fun! And I've never seen Funny Face before!!!! Thanks so much!
