Back To School

There's one hundred and four days of summer vacation, and school comes around just to end it...

That day has come today for my children!

How sweet are these Simplicity Pattern images from the early seventies? (that's me up there clutching the book!)

They make me feel so nostalgic for my own "back to school" days...

The girl on the right here, in both photos, I'm fairly certain is a very young Brooke Shields.

What do you think?

There I am again on the left...aww:)

  1. I was born in 1970, so these styles remind me of my school pictures! My kids started school a few weeks ago, but I grew up in the Northeast and remember starting after Labor Day, and graduating high school in late June. In Atlanta, school is mid August through Memorial Day.

Hope you have a great week!

  2. Really?! How cool!! And I think a most clever way to showcase back to school, "fall" into class with style :) I think my grandma, mom and aunts made every outfit on that second image for me! What a throw back, what a hoot ;) Have a wonderful day Sue! XO, Kelly

  4. I think you are right, looks exactly like Brooke Shields. My 2 year old starts 2 day a week Mother's Day Out tomorrow, first time I'll be sending her off somewhere during the day. So it's sort of like the first day of school, ha!

  5. These are so darling! Love the retro, it would be cool to frame them and hand them in a child's room! XX!

  8. How I wish I could have worn those fashions! Catholic girls' school was quite strict regarding the uniform - gray skirt, white shirt, dark green v-neck sweater - so unimaginative!

  9. Too funny! I see some shoes I used to have and a very similar dress! Love seeing these pictures! Hope everyone has a happy back to school day!

love these; i remember wearing jumpers and ribbed turtlenecks just like that!

    ReplyDelete
  14. How cute! They wore those jumpers short too, I've tried on some of my mom's clothes from the 70's and wow! You've got me curious who the familiar face is... I haven't figure it out!

    XOXO

  16. So So SO SO adorable! I grew up in the 80s. My back to school clothes were much less chic.

  17. oh wow!!!! - frigin' too cute! .. if i was still teaching - THIS would be the day i DREAD! .. once teaching it's all fine and dandy - but the first day is always "back to reality" .. but since i'm back in corporate america - i don't get the after labor day blues :o) .. i still miss my summers off tho!

  21. It's back to school for my twins here too. Seniors this year!. I think you are right and that is Brooke.

  22. I'm sad and excited for my oldest to start preschool full time next year! So crazy that FL starts school so early. They started the year back up the second week of August!

    ReplyDelete
  23. If that's not Brooke Shields it certainly looks like her.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How funny is that? My mom sewed, so I remember a ton of those patterns when we were younger. And I believe there may have been some unfortunate plaid experiences.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Those are so cute! And I love all their looks!

    ReplyDelete
  26. OMG you so brought me back! I remember those days really well. I'm looking at those books in the back at Woolworths over near the fabrics circa 1979. LOL

  28. cute!!! Happy start to your kids Sue!

  29. I love kids clothes from those days because kids dressed like kids. Nowadays kids clothes look just like adult clothes.

p.s. I feel like I'm going back to school because teaching starts at the same time. The cycle continues :-))).

  33. Happy new school days -- to the entire family!

And that retro style is so back in vogue! This is funny. My Frida was wearing something very similar to what Brooke is wearing (sans hat). Just a little bit longer and with black boots. All H&M!

  35. Oh my gosh, i remember those patterns! I used to look through them, buy them and TRY to sew them -- disaster! Sewing has never come easy to me. Everything looks much better in the catalogue! Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

  49. reminds me of picking out outfits for my grandma to sew for me!

    ReplyDelete
  50. These are adorable! How I wish kids would still dress like this (at least to an extent) instead of the baggy jeans and Chucks. Sigh. Ok, I never dressed like this either, but I did wear a fair share of peter pan collared dresses when I was a little girl :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I definitely think that is Brooke Shields! Good eye!

  57. Love these vintage looks...we always wore uniforms to school but I tried to jazz them up with my "accessories" ha. I swear pattern 5821 looks exactly like Maddie's Holiday dress from Hannah Anderson last year. Hope the first day back went well. Maddie starts 2 day a week preschool tomorrow and I know I'll be a wreck! She, not so much....she cannot wait!

I just love patterns. Takes me back to my school days. My mom made ALL my clothes and I thought I was so dorky because I was the only one with homemade clothes. Now I would give anything to have all my clothes made! haha

  60. Ah, the kids (not mine...mine is in utero) went back last week in Miami.

I will say I love these pics, pretty Ms. Shields... and they make me want to bust out my saddle shoes (yes I own a pair) and wear them with argyle socks and a skirt. Perhaps apres bebe arrival in 9 weeks :) xoxo

  61. Yes, I remember this all too well - plaid, short sleeve tops over turtlenecks, jumpers.

So, Sue - we have had three guesses for which one is you - confirmation please!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with Charlotta - middle kid in the first photo. Can tell by your eyes!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Too cute! That is totally Brooke! My mom would still make these for me if I asked...good thing I wont ;) Sometimes I wish my two year old was five just so that she could go to school already! This mom needs a break. Bad.

  64. Ok, so I am totally loving these outfits. Totally. Loving. Want the outfits. Wanted them when I was a kid (had boring 80s outfits instead) and want them now. Checks! Shift dresses! Bell bottoms!

Is this really you in one of these pics? Tell!

  65. these patterns are sooo cute! great colours and cuts too! i love kids who dress up as kids and not try and immitate adults.

  66. Memorieeeeeees!

I can remember going to pick out patterns and fabric SOsoso well with my Mom growing up. Whether it was a Halloween costume or a formal dress for dance class, it was always a bit of a struggle to find the balance between my complicated pattern dreams and my Mom's sewing ability!

    Love this post!

  67. Sad to say, the romper that my daughter wanted to make, pattern and all still lays upon the ping pong table....where did I go wrong? I used to be able to whip up things, stay up all night....
Sewing seems to be making a come back....love these retro looks.
