Channeling Diana Vreeland

"Why don't you paint a map of the world on all four walls of your boys' nursery so they won't grow up with a provincial point of view?"
                                             ~Diana Vreeland

So I did!  This is my son's little alcove bedroom up in our Vermont condo.  We made this room by enclosing a small landing area at the top of the second level stairs.  I love how this cozy, sweet room turned out.
Thanks to Diana Vreeland and her endless supply of creative ideas!

  7. It's fabulous! My husband and I have a great love of maps. I have 4 vintage ones hanging here in my office. I once bought an old one at a garage sale for $2 and it turned out to be from the 1600's. Sold it for $6,000 - that's my great map story :)

  19. So, so lovely -- don't you just adore the Ugly Dolls?
I love the blue paint you used on the trim -- so soft and yet, certainly reminiscent of oceans.

  21. How fantastic. I want to live there! How wonderful to fall asleep, dreaming of all the adventures there are to have in the big wide world...Love it!

  22. Adore this - how fabulous. I LOVE maps. When we moved in to our old house, there was hideous plaid wallpaper in one of the boy's rooms with a fabulous inset vintage map. So I used millwork trim to frame out the map and tore off the rest of the wallpaper. The new owners still have the framed map there. And of course LOVE Diana Vreeland - own that little why don't you book.

  30. I love the coziness of the space and the map. What a secure place for a child.

One of my friends showed me the house where she grew up, just before it was sold after her mother's death, and there were maps everywhere that her father had put up. He marked every route they traveled. I'd like a current one of the world, close to the tv and where I read the paper, just to know where activities are going on today. I have not kept up well on changes in countries and cities since first learning geography in my school days.

Did you do the painting yourself or find someone to do it? Either way, it's fabulous.
