Labor Day Deals

This weekend, I'll be trying my best to savor the last few days of summer.  Tonight we're heading out to an over the top lobster bake and the next two days we've kept our plans very bare minimum.  With a whole lot of nothing on the agenda, I'm hoping to sneak in a bit of cyber sale shopping.  Listed below are some of the stores I plan on hitting up...if you know of any other good sales, be sure to let me know in the comments. Happy Labor Day!

Tory Burch- Take 20% off purchases of $300, 25% off  purchases of $500, and 30% off purchases of $750. Ends: 9/2. Code: LABORDAY  I've got my eye on these gorgeous dark brown boots...they're very Autumn in New York.

Nordstrom- Save 40% off select shoes. Ends: 9/15. Nordstrom shoe sales are legendary around here...I know my oldest daughter will LOVE these bright Nike sneakers.

Barneys-There are a few great pieces on sale over there, you have to poke around a bit, like this cute top!

Shopbop- There are some great items on sale over at Shopbop. Like these Rag and Bone army green jeans that I've been eyeing for a while now, these relaxed fit James Perse tees are the best, and so great for layering and this Helmut Lang white blazer will absolutely still look chic next summer!

And be sure to check out my own shop, zhush, where we have a few great items on sale as well. Like these incredibly popular brass flowers...we need to make room for new fall inventory!

Happy Labor Day sale shopping!

Minor Obsessions

This week's minor obsessions: I really want to be the "organized mom" this year...I do! I'm hoping this pretty pink desk calendar will do the trick, at least it's a start, right?  After a few seasons of gold, gold, gold...silver accessories are catching my eye more and more lately, if Michael Kors is coming out with chic and sleek watches like this one, you can be sure that it's poised for a comeback.  This eye catching blush and this pretty nude gloss are just the things I need to perk up my look, as any summer color I have is sadly fading fast.  Finally, on a whim, I tossed this Diptyque Joie candle, into my Nordstrom online cart last week, and now my entry way smells heavenly...just thought you'd like to know.  What small moments are you obsessing over this week?

Sponsored Post: Total Wallcoverings

matchbook magazine, find similar wallpaper here.
I really love to use wallpaper when decorating my home. So, when Total Wallcoverings approached me about a sponsored post, I enthusiastically agreed. What I’m especially loving right now are powder rooms featuring a bold, attention grabbing wallpaper. (This fixation is apparent when you take a look at my pinterest board, "powder room perfection!") In my Florida guest bathroom I used a leafy wallpaper, like this one, which looks fabulous. I also covered another bathroom in a navy zebra wallpaper, similar to this one, that added some excitement and flair.

Total Wallcoverings, provides an enormous selection of wallpaper, decals, and murals for any design style you can imagine. For a beach home, they offer stylish coral and nautical prints that wonderfully amplify an oceanic theme. However, if you're looking for a more subtle look, there are plenty of gorgeous textured wallpapers to choose from. I'm a fan of this natural grasscloth. The store also has a selection of collegiate decals which make perfect gifts for college bound students. From kitchens to kid's rooms, they've got it all! My absolute favorite part of Total Wallcoverings is that their categories are simple and straightforward so that the website is fantastically easy to navigate. Make sure to check out their website the next time you're looking to spruce up your home!

How To Style A Gallery Wall

When moving into a new home, or revamping a room, a chic gallery wall is the perfect trick for stylishly displaying favorite photographs and artwork. Implementing this design strategy has allowed me to exhibit my personal style while also cleverly masking blank wall space. For the gallery walls in my home, I put together an assortment of black and white family photos as well as a myriad of artwork (a mixture of paintings, prints, and my children's masterpieces). To get some tips on creating your own, take a look at my new blog post on I’ve also begun to “keep” a collection of art, frames, mirrors, sculptures and other wall decor as inspiration for future projects. What ideas do you have for your own gallery wall?

The Eclectic Company

louis vuitton trunks as decor, modern eclectic bright bedroom, boho style
Recently, I did a massive edit of my home...went through all my stuff and left only a few choice pieces out and about, then I saw designer Sig Bergamon's artful and eclectic home in Architectural Digest and my love of "stuff" has clearly been renewed...mostly due to that dressing room in the last image, it's my absolute dream closet, Goyard tote and all. Such is the life of a fickle design you embrace the "more is more" attitude in your home?

Orange Is The New Black

orange studded modern wingback with brass coffee table
The color orange, at least for me, is one of the hardest hues to work with in home decor.  There's no doubt that when done right it's incredibly chic, just look at these boldly styled images from Leigh Mowry of Olive Interiors, all beautifully photographed by Emily Jenkins Followill.  Leigh and I connected over twitter last month and I now consider myself a fan of both her work and of Emily's as well.

On an entirely separate note, I just finished binge watching the entire first season of Orange is the new Black on Netflix...if you liked Weeds, it's done by the same people...highly addictive, higly recommend.

New Arrivals!

Just a quick update on all the new fall arrivals we have in the shop! As much as I can't stand to see summer end, I do love the whole back to school shopping/fall fashion season...which reminds me, these chic little staplers are now back in stock! You can find all these fun items and so much more, right here!

Minor Obsessions

Because I have naturally frizzy, kinky, frazzled, cowlicky all around unruly hair, I go to great lengths to keep it straight.  In the summer, this gets a little trickier.  Last week, I called in the big guns and got another Brazilian Keratin blow out.  For those of you blessed with carefree hair, this is a chemical treatment that entails almost two hours at the salon, and then you can't get your hair wet for at least 24 hours.  Not a problem for me...cause I'm an expert at this point on keeping my hair dry.

The whole experience reminded me of a fun gift I received a few years back, from some friends that knew my penchant for keeping my locks away from water.  Basically it consisted of this very shower cap (that I still use to this day, embarrassing but true) a ridiculous, over the top sixties style swim cap, that I've never used, this chic little umbrella and Klorane dry shampoo.  Of course if I'm every caught in a deluge without my umbrella, I've always got a few of these fun little elastics on hand and a versatile little scarf in my bag. Another good way to extend the life of a great blow out, is to sleep on one of these silk pillowcases.  What beauty/hair quirks and tricks to you use to get by?

Book Review: Tom Scheerer Decorates

tom scheerer pink cotton paisley curtains, vintage white bentwood chair, caning
Receiving a copy of Tom Scheerer Decorates, by Mimi Reed, with photography by Francesco Lagnese, in the mail last week, was a bit of thrill for a design dork like me...I'm such a fan of the fresh, relaxed interiors of Tom Scheerer and this book beautifully encapsulates some of his finest work.  Not only are all the interiors chic, but the actual book itself, is super stylish (especially if you take off the paper dust jacket)!

Give Away: Pretty Smitten Stationery

hello darling print

Recently, Elizabeth Johnson, the owner/founder of Pretty Smitten sent me a set of her stylish stationery and cheerful new prints and I've since fallen in love with the brand. This week’s lucky winner will receive a set of chevron stationery in a gorgeous camel hue with their initial, as well as their choice of one of the 8”x11.5” prints featured here today.

Adirondack Style Decor

rustic reading nook, Adirondack style
Later this week, my family and I will be heading up to the Adirondacks for one last summer get-away before Labor Day weekend and the start of school...I haven't been to this region in New York since I was a very small child, so I really don't know what to expect.  Really, the only thing I do know a bit about is Adirondack style decor.  Back when we were fixing up our ski condo, I must've looked at hundreds of images like these in order to get an idea and some direction on rustic style and design.  At first, I remember I wasn't all that into it, but it's a Vermont ski condo, why reinvent the wheel and go all out in a different direction? So, I ended up embracing the whole thing, and now I can honestly say I really like the warm, friendly laid back living vibe it gives off.  Maybe I'll come back re-inspired! What do you think?

Seven Instagrammers To Follow

I've been obsessed with Instagram for quite some time now, but this summer I've bumped it up a bit, thanks to my top notch intern Danielle, who cleverly figured out how to not only get a streaming gallery of my own grams onto, but also sorted out how to add customer's instagrams featuring our products as well (my favorite thing!)  Now, if you add hash tag #zhush or @zhush on your photo featuring our products, we'll re-gram into our online gallery, cool right?

I hope you'll follow @zhush for behind the scenes glimpes into running a small online business and just life around here in general...that's really the fun part of instagram, right? The quick little peeks into someone's life, whether it's a shopping moment, interiors, art, family, can be pretty compelling to see what other people, brands, etc. are up to.  Here are seven of my current faves...I had to narrow it down a bit from the 446 that I'm currently following/crushing on!

Check out these instagram accounts and let me know in the comments who you're following and  loving these days...

Minor Obsessions

Katie Ridder girls room
This week I'm really obsessed with getting my eleven year old's room into's not really a minor obsession truthfully, but rather a major one.  The room has an odd layout and is proving trickier than I had originally thought (you can see photos of it here).  Unlike my older daughter's room re-do, that practically designed itself, I needed to call in the big guns and get Lauren Muse, to help me sort this out.  The image above, designed by Katie Ridder, is proving to be a helpful jumping off point.  (As is the fabric from this Monday's P.O.P).

In the image above, the simple white bedding and the positioning of the bed in front of the window, with that fabulous window treatment to frame it all out, is absolutely something we are all now considering.  Other considerations include the shape of this headboard, this light fixture and this cute way to add some extra storage, found by my daughter online!  What design projects have you been obsessed with lately?

Book Review: Love Where You Live

country farmhouse dining al fresco with sunflowers, flag stone patio
I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of Joan Osofsky and Abby Adams latest book, Love Where You Live: At Home In The Country, with stunning photos (a few shown here today) all taken by the talented John Gruen.  The author is the owner of the popular lifestyle store, Hammertown Barn, located in the charming town of Rhinebeck, New York.   Love Where You Live: At Home in the Country, is simply brimming with creative ideas and real proven tips on creating the feel of a chic yet cozy country retreat in your own home.  Not just for the traditional and folksy country living fan, there are ideas to inspire a wide range of tastes that all embrace the warmth and ease of the chicest country homes.

Social Networking With Annie Vanacore Photography

Paradise Cove, Malibu, California
I went to high school with Annie of Annie Vanacore Photography, and through the magic of social networking through Facebook, Annie and I have been back in touch for a few years.  I have fond memories of sitting next to Annie (then Ann Marie) in art class and coveting her entire it didn't surprise me one bit to learn that Annie is a talented professional photographer with a specialty in lifestyle shots and family portraits. Annie's work has appeared in numerous well known publications and I thought it might be fun to share some of her beautiful imagery here today...

Wednesday Wants

I'm starting to see all the fall 2013 trends emerge and nothing is making me happier than the abundance of purple fashion and accessories spotted almost everywhere.  As you might be aware, I've a penchant for a good pop of purple in home decor, and the same can be said for my personal style as well. The following are just a few of the ways I plan to be sporting my favorite hue this autumn...

Miu Miu makes some of the chicest wallets around, I love the idea of a moc croc bold purple billfold, this may have to be my next wallet!

Our popular acrylic monogram necklaces are now available in a variety of new colors...the lavender  shade is my newest fave.

This sweet little gold bar bracelet would add just the right hint of pale purple to any outfit, stack a bunch for a modern, bolder look.

Sole Mate by Essie, will absolutely be my new, go to polish for Fall...I've already ordered a bottle and can't wait to try it out on my next pedicure.

Like most brunettes I know, I prefer deep jewel tones when I wear color, this v-neck cashmere sweater by Duffy, is high on my wish list for fall.

A fun, bright scarf like this iconic zig-zag one by Missoni can elevate the simplest outfit into a major fashion moment...need.

I already scooped these flattering shades by Tory Burch, and have been receiving compliments on them almost daily.  I couldn't get over the amount of purple featured in Tory's store and website...complete heaven!

Is there a color or color combo that you're finding yourself completely drawn to this season?

Rhapsody In Blue

How great has Architectural Digest been lately? Editor in Chief, Margaret Russel, has really upped the wow factor with each new issue of this publication and made it a must read.  Case in point, this charming Hampton cottage belonging to artist Anh Duong.  With it's beautiful natural light and surrounding beaches, the Hamptons has been the preferred get away destination for well known New York City artists for decades...Warhol, Lichtenstein and Pollock just to name a few.  Between the cozy chic blue palette and the charming Carolina Irving textiles used through out, I fell in love with every aspect of this endearing retreat.

Decorating With Neutral Colors

bookcase styling, neutral objects, coral, books display
Today, I'm featuring the beautiful interiors of Orrick and Company.  I'm such a fan of the fresh spin this firm puts on neutral color schemes (I posted some of their inviting designs here before, and they still remain some of my all time favorites).  The casual sophistication that a minimal and restrained neutral color palette lends to a home is something I'm finding myself really drawn to these days...

Minor Obsessions

Thanks so much for all the great feedback on our Family Circle feature!  The irony of this article, with it's focus on back to school organization is not lost on me...while I might still be in full laid back summer slacker mode, all three of my children got their grade assignments and class schedules in the mail this week.  I'm already starting to feel so anxious about getting everyone the right school supplies, locker decor and clothes never mind trying to figure out how, what and when their extra curricular activities will be.  Seriously, I know there are parents that love the whole back to school time of year...but, I tend to stress all the obligations and micro managing this brings. I blame my whole generation's over involved helicoptering parenting style...but that's another post for another day. In the meantime, whenever I start to feel overwhelmed, I clean and organize things.  This weekend I plan on getting everyone's closet in shape and hitting up the Container Store in a big way.  These items (some of which we already own but just need more of) are at the top of my list. Wish me luck!

Classically Inspired

leopard print ottoman, le corbusier chairs
We are in the midst of updating our family room.  If you follow my Instagram feed, then you might've seen a few of the updates so far, along with some concerns I have that some pieces aren't working... With half the new furniture in and half the furniture remaining to be ordered, I'm starting to second guess every decision in the process.  Given the amount of time we spend in our family room, I'm feeling the pressure to get this room just right. Whenever I'm truly panicked about design decisions I take to Pinterest, for some inspiration...that's where I found these interiors, all by Allen Kirsch and Associates.  Nothing here looks overly decorated or forced and everything is based on classic design elements.  It's fresh and yet it's traditional, "of the moment" without being too trendy, and that's exactly what I'm shooting for...

Wednesday Wants

Even though we're enjoying some of the best summer summer weather (finally) all season, like most of you, I'm all over Fall fashion at the moment...but really right now is the best time to score some great looking and timeless summer style pieces. Knowing this, I've been eyeing these chic woven Anya Hindmarch clutches and they are happily now all 30% off.  Since rattan clutches are a fashion perennial, I might have to snag this chic Lawrence Heller one too!  We're going to take one last summer trip up to the Adirondacks later this month, I think I might need a cute new maxi dress or two...this one and this one, both by Diane Von Furstenberg, and both on sale, are calling my name.  What late summer sale steals are you scooping up?

We're In Family Circle Magazine!

our homework room, the zhushettes!
In case you missed my social media happy freak out yesterday...the September issue of Family Circle Magazine, featuring me and my children, my house, my business and even the inside of my pantry (cringe) is now out!  You might remember back in May, when I blogged about David Prince, the photographer that shot this...well, now it's finally out and it's basically as exciting as things get over here...I hope you'll check it out!

Peeking Into Designer's Homes

Christina Murphy apartment entry, Louis mirror, orchid
Because I adore everything New York designer, Christina Murphy, does (I've posted her work several times ~ here and here) I was more than delighted to discover this feature on Christina's own Manhattan apartment over on New York Social Diary.  Full of great ideas and chic little vignettes, these are just a few of my faves...

Minor Obsessions

I had every intention on focusing on my daughter's room redo today, but after Wednesday's post on fall fashion, it seems I've let the sartorial horse out of the gate, and now I can't seem to focus on anything else. Blame it on the fact that last season I waited too long before shopping, only to have almost everything on my mental wish list sell out in my size. I don't know if it's because stores are carrying less these days, but I've decided to up my game just a bit and not actually wait for the actual season this time around.

At the top of said list, are some chic new tops. I love the colors on this cashmere sweater by Joseph, and I'm pretty sure the strategic design will be flattering for all.  Also flattering are V-necks...they make your neck and torso longer, and who wouldn't want that?  When they come in black silk crepe de chine like this one by Theory, it's a no brainer (the 3/4 sleeves here add length to arms and let you show off cute bracelets) The same flattering look can of course be accomplished with a silk button down, undo a couple of buttons, roll up those sleeves and voila! With that thought, this chic camo silk blouse by Equipment, needs to be mine as well.

A friend of mine recently tipped me off that ASOS has great belts for less than $15.00 each! This studded one and this classic black one need to be mine.  I recently acquired these classic RayBan Clubmasters, I love them but my kids are not so sure...oh well.

I own a black belted shawl collar cardigan, but mine is really well loved, full of pills and looking more like a bathrobe at this point, so I was thrilled to find the Gwen cardigan by Tory Burch. I know I'll be turning to this piece again and again once the temps start to dip.  Coated jeans were big last season, I even own a cute pair in burgundy, but the new cut on these black Current/Elliot ones are so appealing, I might need another pair...

I got into the smoking slipper trend last year with a pair of black velvet ones, and now I find myself drawn to some of the wilder prints out there, these animal print slippers would punch up any plain jane outfit in my closet.  Also lending some flair are these crazy gold rings by doubt we'll be seeing a lot of knock off looks on this trend this fall. This isn't something that I'd personally wear, I just couldn't resist how pretty it looked in this post...happy weekend!

Style Stalking: Kishani Perera

lamp, vintage photos, flowers, wooden box, vignette
I first came across the beautiful interior design work of Kishani Perera, back in 2007, when InStyle magazine featured actress Molly Sim's amazing apartment. In fact, I loved this so much, that I tracked down Matthew Heller,  the artist responsible for the piece in the photo directly below, and commissioned one for our own home, which you can see here! It's safe to say that for six years now, I've loved everything Ms. Perera designed.  Now, I'm thinking, that in order to stalk this talented lady's work as efficiently as I would like, I'm going to need to add Kishani's chic tome, Vintage Remix to the top of my must have design book list. For now, here are a few of my faves from Kishani's eclectic and vibrant portfolio...
