No Tricks, Just Treats

Happy Halloween!  After two horrible years of super storms and awful weather, my three kids finally get to go trick or treating again today.  Thanks to this outstanding fall weather, we're all feeling the holiday Halloween spirit around here, and is it my imagination, or is everything haunted and spooky suddenly tres chic? It's enough to almost make me wish I were dressing up in costume with my General Grevious, Cat and Cheerio this evening.  Are you?

Wednesday Wants: Taxi Cab Confession

Last week I was in New York City, twice (which is a lot for me) at some point during my travels, I found myself hailing a cab.  When the taxi pulled over, I was stuck in one of those awkward moments that I imagine only happen to people in larger cities...the passenger in the cab was scrambling to pay her fare as I stood waiting there with the door open.  The fact that this lady didn't have her money at the ready, gave her away as a tourist (at least in my mind) and sure enough, I was right.  You see, I couldn't help but notice the chic sweater she was all wrapped up in as I anxiously awaited her departure, and as we switched spots, I even complemented her on it.  She thanked me in a thick Scandinavian accent, explaining that she acquired hers back in Sweden!  For all I know, she was a model...(she towered over me when she finally stepped out).  And now, back home in the burbs I can't stop thinking about this fabulous Aztec sweater wrap...which looked a whole lot like the one above that I tracked down on Pinterest.  Some more googling finally led to something really similar here! To me, it looks almost identical, don't you think? And, you can't beat the price! Some other great look alike options below...

Top Five Scented Candles

Once fall arrives, you can be sure there's a candle burning around here almost daily. Friends that know me well, know my penchant for pretty scented candles and can't believe I haven't already written about my top picks here before today.  I love to give these as gifts, I buy them for myself and of course I love to receive them as well.  I'm still trying to narrow down my selection to the one line that I'd love to carry over at my "maybe/someday" dreams of owning a brick and mortar store, the shop would smell amazing due to the beautiful selection of candles (plus, great tunes playing always) but until that day arrives, these lovely offerings are lighting up my life right now.

I chose these candles as my top five picks for both the amazing scents and also for the beautiful containers, since (like most bloggers I know) I love to re purpose these little holders as mini vases and catchalls after the candle is gone...

Ready, Set...

As you might recall from this post, I've been thinking a lot about how I'd like our table settings to look this holiday season.  While I'm pretty good about mixing our various patterns and finding some fresh ideas for centerpieces, one thing that always trips me up is the proper placement for everything on the table.  That's one reason I was so happy to discover this lovely informative chart over at Antiquaria, a fabulous blog (and shop with the same name).  While I know the fork goes on the left,'s those little things like soup spoons and dessert forks that always confuse me, since I typically don't set a formal table like this every night, (seriously, who does?)

Since beautiful place settings are always catching my eye, I've rounded up a few of my faves below, as well as some chic ideas for zhushing up your own celebrations.  High on my must-have list is the whole Juliska Country Estate dinnerware line, I think these charming plates would brighten up my whole table this fall. Also enticing, gold flatware sets that I've been eyeing for months, and are finally on sale (today is the last day to save 25% at West Elm). For more thoughts on how I get our table holiday ready, be sure to check out my post over at

Minor Obsessions: Sweater Weather

1 | 2 | 3
4 | 5 | 6
7 | 8 | 9

Here in New York, we are officially experiencing sweater weather!  Give me about three weeks, and I'll probably be completely over it, but right now all these crisp Autumn days have me curled up in cashmere and loving it.  There was a time when I just had a closet full of black basic sweaters, but these days it seems the options for keeping warm in style are almost endless.  Catching my eye...anything marled, embellished, color blocked, textured and my favorite asymmetrical hem, which I'm finding to be very flattering!

PPS: My black basic sweater habit is a hard one to break...I just picked up this Joie cashmere Crush sweater, love it so much, had to share...the deep V cowl neckline and reversed seems give it a bit more personality, plus it fits my number one criteria: #flattering!

Tweaking (not Twerking)

Along with apple picking, pumpkin carving, clothes and back to school shopping, fall's arrival always gets me re-thinking about ways to tweak and improve our interior design...specifically, the rooms we use the most around here.  These days I'm hyper focused on sprucing things up in our family room, calling in Lauren Muse, for the larger items, hitting up my shop for some new accents, and even moving around a few pieces from room to room, in order to see them (and love them) in a new light. I'm also browsing every site, magazine and book I can get my hands on for inspiration.  A recent fave is Diane Bergeron Design, each image has me scheming up ways to duplicate the way she beautifully pulls things together and accessorizes.

Wednesday Wants: Fashion Dilemma Solved!

Like most women I know, I love the flattering and fashionable look of a pointed toe, high heel pump...but I've come to the conclusion that I really can't commit to this type of style for longer than a fancy dinner date night out, basically, the same idea behind Oprah's "five minute shoes." As much as I hate to admit it, the older I get, the more my preference is leaning towards comfort over, I tend to be fairly klutzy, not a good quality for walking in towering stilettos. With a few dressier events on my calendar, (all in New York City and all requiring walking) I thought I'd give another type of shoe option a try...the pointed toe wedge.  It might seem like the most obvious thing, but up until quite recently, I really only wore wedges in the warmer months.  All of my wedge heels were slings backs, open toe, espadrilles, or all three combined...but I've happily just discovered a whole bunch of great looking pointed toe wedge shoes that give me the height and the leg extending look of a pump, with the comfort and the extra support of a wedge.  Fashion win/win in my book!

I now happily own these leopard Brian Atwood wedges and these fabulous suede Chloe shoes. I think this pair of patent leather nude wedge heels are in my near future, since they'll go with everything (and you can't beat that price!).  I've also got my eye on a few other pairs, including a very chic pair of pointed toe black leather ankle boots, scroll through below to see the rest...

Re-Imagined In Old Westbury

Last weekend, I finally got my hands on a copy of the design book, Steven Gambrel: Time and Place, and was literally blown away (once again) by Gambrel's timeless interiors.  Inspired to see more, I revisited and fell instantly in love with this grand estate in Old Westbury, New York.  Restored, remodeled and re-imagined from it's original splendor, the entire home looks so completely modern and yet classically preserved all at once...I guess that really is the very definition of timeless design!

Book Review: Fifth Avenue Style: A Designer's New York Apartment

Fifth Avenue Style: A Designer's New York Apartment, arrived at my door earlier this month in very high style, and did not disappoint!  Written by Howard Slatkin, a well known New York City based interior designer and co-founder of the lifestyle brand, Slatkin & Co, this fabulous design book consists of a detailed tour of Mr. Slatkin's extravagant Fifth Avenue abode.  Readers are given the thought process behind all the design decisions made for this sumptuous apartment. No detail is too small and none have been left out (I love that), including photos of the inside of closets to original floor plans and beyond. I'm thoroughly enjoying taking my time with this decadent book and learning a lot in the process, I think you will too.

Minor Obsessions: Beauty Splurges

After sharing some of my favorite drug store beauty steals here a few weeks ago, I thought I'd share all my make up splurges here today.  Most of these products have won some type of "beauty award" which is basically how I've found them through the years. The world of cosmetics can be overwhelming, so I'm always grateful for awards that can narrow down the daunting selection.  Sites that offer reviews and feedback like Sephora and Nordstrom are also so helpful, especially when some of these products can be quite expensive and usually by the time you figure out it's not for you, it's also not refundable.  I use all of the above for some time now and consider them to be "must haves".  What does your beauty routine look like, are you loyal to your products or do you like to play and sample?

Seven More Cozy Nooks To Love

Three years ago, I did a quick piece on one of my favorite design elements...nooks! To this day, it remains one of my most popular posts.  At first, this sort of surprised me, since there really isn't much to it, but then I gave this some more thought and realized that it actually makes sense.  I think most people crave warm and cozy spaces and really want their homes to feel that way.  Seeing built in reading nooks, banquettes and window seats evokes the very essence of this least it does for me. That's why I love these spots so much, especially in the fall, when that "home is everything" nesting instinct really kicks in.  Are you feeling it too?

Shopbop Friends and Family Sale!

Just in case you missed some of last week's great Friends and Family events, Shopbop has come to the rescue with a 25% off sale event...just enter INTHEFAMILY25 at check out to get 25% off your entire order!

This sale is the best, especially if you're like me and have been literally stalking a few items on the Shopbop site for weeks.  Specifically, this Theory cardigan, these black Rag and Bone Harrow booties and this Vince cashmere sweater are all on there way to me right now!  Too bad I wasn't as patient when I bought this pair of Diane Von Furstenberg black cropped pants and paid full price, (only just last month)...but the on the positive side, I can now tell you that they are amazingly flattering and comfortable and I've been wearing them almost every weekend.

I'm considering hitting up this sale one more time for some gifts...I know a few girls that would love to receive these fun boxes, (and I might have to peruse the DVF and Helmut Lang offerings not to mention the Kelly Wearstler jewelry at least one more time).  Also, Mr. Zhush has a Birthday this month and Shopbop now carries men's clothing at their brother site, East Dane...same big savings event, same code, same everything really.  I think a few cashmere sweaters are in order, like this one and this one.

I could go on and on about my endless Shopbop wishlist, but really things are selling out fast and this sale ends Thursday (as in tomorrow!)...

Let me know if you hit this up, and of course what you got!

Holiday Table Inspiration

Last month, I attended a lifestyle workshop in New York City, hosted by Better Homes and Gardens. One of the highlights of this event, was getting to see talented entertaining expert, Eddie Ross in action (as seen in the last image below).  Eddie gave us all some creative tips for setting a beautiful table.  The emphasis was really on mixing things up, using high end with thrift store finds and putting a lot of personal touches into the occasion like colored candle sticks and beautiful place cards.

At one point, Eddie inquired if we (the bloggers in attendance) all have a "prop closet" and many raised their hands! Well, it wasn't until later, that I realized...of course I did have a prop closet as well, my own shop. Not only does sell a lot of really great table top pieces, but I've also personally accumulated a lot of tableware through years of hosting holidays and special occasions. One long mental inventory later, I decided to employ many of Eddie's great tips.

The first setting is a nod to country style, using a flannel blanket, and some clippings from the garden in a brass mint julep cup. The second setting is closer to how I typically set the table for a holiday, using place mats in lieu of a table cloth (so much easier when there are wiggly young children at the table). For both ideas, I used a lot of my own pieces plus I also styled up some of my favorite table top items from zhush, including a brass mint julep cup, this fun glass mouse salt and pepper set, these uber chic marble salt and pepper cellars, beautiful horn spreaders, these popular beaded burst napkin rings along with the coordinating crocheted edged napkins.

Thanks to Better Homes and Gardens for a great day and to Eddie for all the inspiration.  I'll be heading into New York for another social media event later this week, be sure to follow me on Instagram (@zhush), where I'm much better at posting these fun happenings in real time.

Postcards From Palm Springs

Over the weekend, I received the sweetest little book in the mail from Schiffer Publishing, aptly entitled Palm Springs: Mid Century Modern Postcard Book. As you might guess from the name, this book consists entirely of beautiful postcards of Palm Spring's famous sleek and minimalist mid century architecture. I was particularly drawn to all the colorful front doors.  While I've never been to Palm Springs, it's very high on my list of places to visit some day.  The photography here, by Dolly Faibyshev, captures some of the bluest skies I've ever seen, reason enough for a trip in my book!  If you know a mid-century modern fanatic, this would make a very thoughtful gift.

Minor Obsessions: Leopard Print

leopard print for home and fashion accessories

How is it possible that I've not devoted a full post to my love of leopard?  Considering I own and or sell everything above and then some (because all of it wouldn't fit in this collage) it's crazy that I haven't obsessed a bit about this iconic fashion print here before.

It all started out in the late nineties when I wanted to add a bit of pizazz to our very neutral starter apartment in New York City.  I remember feeling very sophisticated when I came home from Gracious Home with a bunch of leopard print pillows to scatter about our sectional sofa. Bolstered by my new acquisition for the home, these memorable pillows became my gateway drug to all things leopard.  It was shortly after, that I discovered leopard print gloves which in turn, became a leopard print scarf purchase...The leopard accessories accumulated in my closet as I noticed this print (now ubiquitous) more and more.

Then a few years ago, I made the jump from small accessories to a cardigan, which became an instant favorite and most recently, this blouse, which I absolutely love.  However, I've decided that's IT for me.  Despite my love of leopard and despite numerous pins of fashionable ladies sporting amazing leopard coats and even some leopard pants, I can't do it.  Not for lack of trying...I must've ordered about three or four leopard coats and returned them all.  I don't feel like myself in them.

Wearing leopard can be tricky.  Despite a closet full of accessories, I will never wear any of these two leopard pieces together at the same time.  Leopard can go from Kate Moss chic to full on Mrs. Roper meets Snookie in a hot minute. So for me, it's an obsession that I love in the home and in fashion, but mostly, just in small doses.  How do you feel about leopard?

Lost and Found

Over on Pinterest, I stumbled upon this clever "art" idea featured in the New York Times.  Here, the concept was carried out using stray mittens and gloves found throughout New York City and then cleverly framed up like an art installation. Like any family with small children we always end the winter season with a plethora of mismatched mittens and gloves, so I can't believe that it never dawned on me to frame them like this! Especially since I have a penchant for framing items of clothing. We have a framed silk scarf up in Vermont, which I loved so much that I repeated the idea with a similar scarf in my son's room.  I also framed my son's little baby swim trunks. Probably the most special is the little dress my Grandmother made for my mother back in the old country...the very same one she wore in her passport photo when she immigrated to this country from occupied Germany.  It's such a special tie from one generation to the next. (It's hanging in our basement playroom, and almost impossible to photograph properly!)  Do you have a thing for framing heirlooms and clothing as well?

Wednesday Wants: Fall Fashion Staples

Yesterday, I had one of those days where I felt like I had to be too many places at once and was running ten minutes late for all of them. While I dread days like that, when I'm feeling "spread too thin" I do appreciate having a few fall back items in my closet that I know I can grab in a pinch, throw on and still feel relatively put together.  Like most mom's I know, I'm running around so much, that comfort is also a priority.  For me, a no brainer outfit looks a lot like the one Charlize Theron is  wearing (so beautifully) in the image above.  Black skinny jeans are a must in my closet, along with a basic black yet chic tee (I have these in every color they make, love em' so much) and then an open cardigan to finish it all off.  Throw on some flats or some boots and I'm good to go.  If time permits, I'll accessorize just like Charlize here with this chunky gold cuff bracelet or a long necklace. This is basically my fall uniform, aside from the occasional poncho day or cable knit sweater look, I'll switch the black skinnies out for denim and mix up the colors of my tee and might be boring for some, but for me it's really what works best.  What's your go to fall uniform look like?

Accessory Spotting

Even though we've already wrapped up our 2013 look book for, I can't stop myself from combing Pinterest for additional inspiration.  I really do love getting new ideas for zhushing with the very same home decor accessories that we sell right here.  These images are not only giving me a fresh take on our inventory, but they're also motivating me to start thinking about my 2014 lookbook layout...

Just Peachy

I've just discovered a new online magazine, Peachy! Based in the South, Peachy aims to "take you inside gorgeous homes, walk you through verdant gardens, share savory dishes, introduce you to beautiful art and architecture and much, much more..." This home, from the October issue drew me right in... I love everything about this lovely space, right down to the last well thought out design detail here. For more about this home and this new online magazine in general, be sure to check out Peachy the Magazine .

Weekend Sales Roundup

Friends and Family is in full swing at some of my favorite online retailers!  I have a close friend that is always sending me emails reminding me of great sales...and even though I generally get the same alerts that she does,  I love that she's looking out for me, plus I usually need all the help remembering  that I can get (if you're that friend, keep em' coming!). So, in the same thoughtful spirit as my friend, here's a roundup of some fabulous sales going on right now. And, please, if I've left anything good out...leave it in the comments.  I'm hoping to be that obnoxious organized girl that sorts out a big chunk of holiday gifts (at marked down prices) way ahead of time...especially given that Chanukah falls out early this year, meaning NEXT month...(eeek)

J.Crew is offering up to 25% select sweaters, like this fab elbow patch one, so classically preppy pretty in navy, to redeem enter code: SWEATERS. There are a bunch of other great deals over there, like markdowns on beautiful statement necklaces, I love this one.

It's friends and family time over at BLOOMINGDALES! I've literally already hit this twice! A fun top for my daughter  and a new cute cashmere color block cardi for me, on sale and then additionally marked down another 20%...with the friends and family promo code: BFRIENDS PLUS free shipping...I might have to head back there for this too (and hey, I could do some holiday shopping)

Also holding friends and family events this weekend...

DVF: with savings of 30% using code FRIENDS30, this top, in brazen plum (love that) is seriously calling my name!

TORY BURCH: save 25% with code FRIENDS plus free shipping...these brown booties are at the tippy top of my must have list. I would live in these till spring....

JOIE: save 20% with code JOIEFRIENDS. I think half my closest is made up of Joie tops, no exaggeration!  I bought this very black shirt last month and annoyingly paid full price, but it's become one of my favorites, same holds true for these super cute boots, yup, full price and a current fave.

EQUIPMENT: 20% off with code EQFRIENDS. I adore the whole Equipment line and have been wearing these chic silk tops for years.  This grown up camo print and this fun plaid shirt are both in my cart as I type this...

Finally, just like the big stores and shops above, over at my own little shop, we've added a bunch of great inventory to our sales section, in order to make room for some Holiday items coming in. There are some great pieces from the popular Waylande Gregory line, that have been reduced. Check them out here!

Minor Obsessions: Black and Blue Fashion

Much like my love for black and white fashion statements, wearing black with blue is a great way to dress and look very "of the moment" without purchasing anything new.  We all have these colors in our closets already, why not pair them up together?  Here are some great looking picks to inspire you to try this chic color combo.  My personal fave is an all black outfit, accessorized with a blue statement piece! How do you wear black and blue together?

Modern Kitchen Bliss

Poking around the internet the other day, on a post-lunch-slump-caffeinated-Pumpkin-Spice-latte sugar high, I fell down a design internet rabbit hole, the likes of which I hadn't seen in quite some time. It started out innocently enough with the October issue of Lonny which brought me to the Cultivate kitchen design website, which ultimately sent me over to the Croma Express design portfolio, where I found all these fabulous modern kitchens.  It was here that my figurative jaw literally dropped over these stunning (and all white!) masterpieces.  Have a look and let me know if you're loving these designs as much as I am...

Wednesday Wants: Wear It Now and Wear It Later

We are enjoying some amazing weather here in New York this week.  If only this could last! As far as actual mild temps in the North East, the fall season can be very short.  I have childhood memories of all too many Halloween costumes basically "ruined" by the addition (and the dire need) of my winter coat and I can even remember Thanksgiving snow storms.  The time to wear cute fall flats and boots along with fun leather jackets is basically right now.  Soon enough we'll be donning heavy parkas and snow boots.  But it's not all fashion doom and gloom...the one accessory that always gets me through the brutal winters here in style is of course the scarf.  Last year I purchased a navy faux fur scarf and it instantly became my favorite go-to winter accessory, second only to my beloved leopard infinity scarf.  This year, with plaid being so hot, I'm considering adding this cute red and navy plaid scarf from the Gap to my growing collection.  When the temps start to really dip, I can't think of a better accessory to get me (warmly) through winter in style, can you?

My scarf obsession runs deep, scroll through to see the ones I'm coveting right now...

Style Stalking: Sara Ruffin Costello

I've been meaning to openly obsess about my love for everything that Sara Ruffin Costello designs for awhile now, but given how much and how many projects she has her hand in these days, I would probably need a whole new blog devoted soley to these endeavors (what a beautiful blog that would be).  Instead, I've decided to focus my style stalking on Ms. Costello's interior design projects.  I really can't get enough of these fabulous interiors, can you?
