All In The Details: Wallpapered Ceilings

Everyone tends to focus on the walls and floor of a room, but the ceiling shouldn't be over looked. Paying some attention to the ceiling will elevate the look of any space - literally and figuratively.  My favorite way to do this is with wallpaper. I was going to round up a few inspiration images from Pinterest, but then realized I had enough examples from my own home to make this point clear.

As you can see, this is one of my favorite design "tricks" to employ. From high impact designs (the Ralph Lauren constellation glow in the dark paper in my son's room above) to a more neutral approach (like the grass cloth papers in our mudroom and guest bathroom below). Papered ceilings can be the perfect finishing touch in almost any space - including closets.

  1. I love the look - such an unexpected surprise for an often overlooked space. Happy Wednesday, Sue!

  2. I have uniquely painted ceilings (gold in the master) but not papered! I love the idea, Sue. And you have done it so well in your home! Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. I LOVE this idea but what does one do when all the ceilings in their home are textured? We bought our first house last year, and much to my dismay, every house that was available in our budget had textured ceilings. My husband assured me it's easy to scrape and refinish.

Fast forward almost a year later, we are wrapping up a basement renovation we've done on our own, and oh my lord, refinishing those ceilings to make them smooth was a HUGE pain in the ***!!!! Hiring it out isn't really in the budget when we still need to furnish our house. Hoping our next home will have less "builder grade" details and a more custom feel!

I got chills when viewing your guest bathroom. The larger tiles look the same as ours and I've been in a quandary regarding the direction I need to go for the walls. Are your tiles a very light taupe or are they gray? I don't see how I can justify the cost for our huge bathroom although your paper is gorgeous. If you had to paint your walls, what color would you have chosen???
    Thanks a million.........BRM

  5. Thanks! the tiles are gray with a little beige. I think if I were to go with paint, I'd go with white! Hope this helps, good luck!

I remember wallpapering the ceiling of my bedroom growing up with my sister and my mom. We girls laughed a lot as the paper kept falling off on our heads as we held it up (while standing on furniture) as my mom smoothed out the bubbles. Such a great memory and the room looked fabulous! I will have to try this in my home now! Thanks for the idea!
