Signature Style

Does having your own signature style mean the same thing as having great style?  I certainly hope not.  I can't even commit to a signature cocktail.  I'm all over the map when it comes to personal style, both in my closet and in home decor. For me, it's really more of a gut reaction, and even this can change quite often.  However, there are some style constants in my life. I know without a doubt that I prefer white kitchens, regardless of the actual design era it's designed in.  I love the clean, pristine calm that only a white kitchen can deliver.  Of course I can appreciate other types and colors in kitchens when done well...I just know for my life, a white kitchen works best.  And, while it's a pretty broad category, maybe even a stretch...it's one of the few decor aspects that I can confidently claim without feeling fickle or waffling, ever. What are some design constants in your life?

  3. I have to agree on the white kitchen. My first kitchen redo, almost 20 years ago was a white kitchen. Now in my third house, I still want a white kitchen.

  4. Totally with you! I love colour so much and all sorts of styles but a white, classy kitchen cannot be beaten to me.

  7. I'm with you, Sue. Love a white kitchen. (I'm on my third!) Eclectic-ness has to be the center of my "style signature" but constants are vintage things with lots of character and the juxtaposition of the unexpected. I think it's good to have lots of flexibility in your style and not get boxed into a narrow view.

  8. I completely agree! White kitchens, wood floors, white drapery hung from black rods and white slipcovers. hmm.. I guess I love white? :)

  9. White kitchens are design consistent for me as well...as long as the client agrees. I am also crazy when it comes to the details, to the ceiling finish to the way hardware on cabinets works from one to another. Since I am always working with drastically different clients that is really the only constant I can have.

  10. My signature style is definitely no nonsense classy. I love a good LBD and I love a line skirts. For a home? I love white and lots of natural lighting.

  20. Sue,
Agree there are favorites and classics to love, but I could no more keep using the same sofa over and over as I could wear the same shoes! Variety is definitely the design obsessed spice for life!!!

  21. This place looks great! Did you use any Online Interior Design Service when you were working on it? I have been using Simply Decorate to design my own home. While I do work with them, I have honestly found their tools, ideas, and inspiration to be invaluable. You should take a look.

  22. I love this post and totally agree. I also feel like I should fit myself in a category but it's hard to put myself in one box especially since I see so many beautiful ideas in all of the categories-- traditional, contemporary, coastal, modern... I def do tend to go more towards coastal, relaxed, traditional with a whimsical and contemporary twist but I agree it really depends on the room, the mood, the person, the feel.

  23. Oh and as spunky and colorful as I like things I also chose a white kitchen and when my designer friend tried to talk me out of a white backsplash to go with my white cabinets I told her that there's enough craziness in my life and since I spend so much time in the kitchen (since it is the heart of our home) I need it to be a no fuss, clean slate!
