Prelude To A Party

A true "girlie-girl" at heart,
I love primping and prepping for a party.
Taking my time for a casual dinner out with friends,
or a black tie affair with hundreds...
half the fun for me is the
"before time".

I posted about
my own little dressing area here,
when I channeled one of my
favorite style icons, Diana Vreeland.

Speaking of Ms. Vreeland...
"This is a very serious subject with me.  I've given
this a lot of thought.  I adore dressing and I adore making up.
I adore the procedure-it's terribly invigorating, both during my
getting up in the morning and during my getting ready to
go out in the evening.  It gives me such pleasure."
~Diana Vreeland

Tomorrow, be sure to stop by The Shiny Pebble,
as Catherine is hosting the hottest
virtual party in town!
Cheers!

  1. Oh Sue, this looks gorgeous... I am with you, getting ready for the event is as much fun or more than the event itself. Thank you for posting!

  2. I love this post, it is a wonderful feeling getting dressed up, I just love that first pic!!!

  3. Agree that getting ready is at least 1/2 the fun. Great inspiration images....fun post!

  4. I am so with you, Sue! I love getting ready, and it's so crazy, I have a fabulous Heywood Wakefield vanity, but I never use it, it's purely for decoration, I end up just getting ready in our bathroom. But this inspires me to actually sit at the vanity and primp!

  5. A vanity....for well...our vanity! They are a fun and neccessary part of being female! Loved seeing all the pretty spaces!!!

  8. It would be DREAMY to both HAVE a beautiful vanity like any of these as well as the TIME to do it up right before an event. Lately it seems like I am rushing to everything. A vanity in my bedroom would be a great reminder to slow it down. Great images and inspiration : ) xx Suzanne

  9. During the week I have a very "low key" beauty routine...but I love to step it up for a night out with the girls or a party...having a little dressing area completes the process :)

  12. Will always love the Aerin Lauder dressing room!

  13. I need to primp my vanity area --- great inspirations! If you feel great when you walk out the door, your focus will be on others not yourself. Which....makes one not so vain!!!

  14. I love the primping before the party, especially with a glass of vino or champagne to get the party started, love the post!

  17. i made a lil dressing area in my room - i'm one of those people who own a lot of "make-up" but NEVER uses it - nor really know's how to apply it "correctly" .. i'm a simple girl at heart i guess - with big dreams ..

  19. I love having a vanity and a dressing area! Mine doesn't look nearly as dreamy as any of these spaces but it's still nice to have!

  20. Lovely images and inspiration. I really love having my hair and makeup done before an event & then all I have to do is get dressed and choose my jewerly, which is one of my favorite things to do.

  24. I want a vanity so bad. I have been eyeing one for a while, but now you are really making me want it!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are so right, the prep beforehand is half the fun. My family enjoys going to concerts, and we always spend time choosing outfits and jewelry, depending on the venue, the artist, the location. It's almost an art in itself!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I want, or rather i need all that space in the closet! And just how chic it looked!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Fact: There is no better feeling for a lady than being properly maintained and fluffed up for the evening. Fact: There is nothing WORSE than having to rush to get there...you know that feeling when your arms are aching from blow drying your hair...it like almost makes you panic?? Or when your boyfriend/husband/chilluns are tapping their feet waiting for you??

  28. What great spaces - and I clicked through to yours - absolutely lovely! You've definitely got style.

These pictures remind me of SJP. I wish i had a lovely space to get ready. My bathroom is so tiny and cramped.

  37. I definitely agree with the matter of dressing up. A girl's gotta look her best!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I absolutely agree that getting ready is half the fun. I would love to have a vanity in my bedroom but would I use it? Who knows. I think I just want it to create an atmosphere in my bedroom.

  39. there is something so romantic about sitting at a dressing table and getting ready. I think it is a lost art of our microwave society. We dash out the door instead of languishing at a dressing table. Sometimes the old way is a better way!! Kathysue

  40. Oh, I love party anticipation, too. And if you can dress up in surroundings like these (or like yours, as I just checked out) all the better! xoxo

  41. nope not me- takes me less than five minutes to get ready for a saturday night- I would rather be in my swimsuit until the eleventh hour- as long as I know what I'm going to wear- I am good to go.
I have never in my life sat down to put make up on although my monther did- Our last two houses had vanity areas which I've gotten great at converting into storage.

Thanks for the Diana Vreeland introduction- I will look her up, maybe give her a call- see if she'll speak to me.

My daughter finally has long enough hair to put in pig tails so we get to primp together every morning. It's so much fun!

  52. How wonderful! I love a good dressing room and have vivid memories of sitting silently watching my mother getting ready for the string of fabulous events that my parents attended way back when.
There is something magic about these 'before' moments and I too love getting ready... though I must admit it was way easier before my own children were born.. There is nothing silent about these wonderful little people!.. :)

Diana Vreeland. Yes me too! I love this woman and all her eccentricities! Have read a couple of books about her and think her life must have been so much fun. She had the most fantastic way of writing and expressing herself and all her ideas are so fabulous. Her 'Why don't you..' column was brilliant and I love how she suggested that one should 'wash the children's hair in Champagne like they do in France..' How obnoctiously wonderful! :)

Now lovie, I have a little US/Canada only give-away waiting for you to join over at my little corner. Hop across and put your entry in for a chance to win a gift card.

Hoping to be able to make it to the party tomorrow.

  65. I want my bathroom to look like picture number 5! So my 'getting ready' routine is crazy, frantic and involves trying on about 20 different outfits which results in a PILE of clothes on the bed. Lots of swearing and my husband leaving the room to fix a drink and wait quietly with the dog.

Stop by my blog and I'll get you a drink....

  71. One of my favorite illustrations, is of a man and woman "readying" to go out on the town, he is in full tux, and she is literally "half-done" and he tells her, you look fine. I wish I could take less time, like a man...but there is something about changing earrings ten times or finding something that just says alright - :enough: - ready now dear!
